Every so often, I’ll post something on social media that begins with the words “History teacher here…”
I create these posts because I see history being twisted, stretched, or stripped of context in ways that undermine understanding. My goal isn’t to take sides, but to remind people that the past is not a blank canvas on which we can paint whatever story fits the moment.
History is evidence. It is patterns, causes, and consequences. It’s the long memory of humanity, and when that memory is ignored, our ability to make sense of the present starts to crumble.
As a history teacher, I’ve spent years helping students connect the dots between what happened then and what’s happening now. My ‘history teacher here’ posts serve the same purpose: to offer context and clarity when misinformation creeps in.
In times like these, educators have a quiet but critical role to play. Whether we teach history, science, or literature, our training gives us tools to guide others toward critical thinking.
So to my fellow educators: I urge you to share your skills and bring the light when others bring noise.
